The community of Rockaway was established as a seaside resort in 1909 by the Rockaway Beach Company. It was named after Rockaway Beach on Long Island in New York, and its post office was established in 1911. The seaside resort was connected by train to Portland in 1912.

Seaside's famous Cove has some of the best waves in the Pacific Northwest.

Praia do Norte ('North Beach') is a beach located in Nazaré, portuguese Oeste region, which due to its giant white breaking waves is famed for its surfing conditions. Nazaré's waves were listed on the Guinness Book of Records for the biggest waves ever surfed.

While the entire beach is open for sunbathing, only some areas are open for swimming. If you are planning to swim, look for the sand-colored bays below, and avoid the bays marked in gray.

Sommerville Basin, about 1.2 miles eastward of the railroad bridge at Rockaway Beach, has depths of 27 to 40 feet inside.

On Good Friday, March 27, 1964, at 5:36 p.m., the largest earthquake to be measured in North America occurred at a magnitude of 9.2, creating a tsunami that, a few hours later, left an unforgettable tract of damage and destruction along the Oregon coast. This March, it will have been 58 years since the tsunami hit.

The approach of the bottom in shallow areas causes the lower portion of the wave to slow down and compress, forcing the wave's crest higher in the air. Eventually this imbalance in the wave reaches a breaking point, and the crest comes crashing down as wave energy is dissipated into the surf.
